The vision behind the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act was to transform healthcare delivery in the United States and achieve better care experiences, better health, and lower costs. The reality of the situation is that many pieces of the vision are still evolving and no one really knows where it will stop. What is clear is that today’s healthcare delivery model will have to change in some way to handle future volumes and requirements without breaking the bank.

The Accountable Care Organization (ACO) is supported and has become the vision for the future. A critical element of an ACO will be the ability to share patient data at the point of care and rely on historical and longitudinal data for use in managing population health.
